Alexandra Eala Advances to Berlin Open Semifinals After Beating Two Top-10 Players

Philippine tennis player Alexandra Eala secured a spot in the Berlin Open semifinals by defeating world No. 8 Elina Svitolina, 6-3, 6-4, continuing a remarkable grass-court run. Eala will next face Czech player Linda Noskova in a high-stakes matchup on Saturday.

Back-to-Back Victories Over Elite Opponents

Eala's path through the Berlin tournament has been marked by consecutive wins against top-ranked players. Just 24 hours before her victory over Svitolina, the Filipino athlete defeated world No. 2 Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinals. The match against Svitolina lasted one hour and 23 minutes, with Eala demonstrating control throughout. She raced to a 4-1 lead in the opening set and maintained composure in the second set, breaking Svitolina three times before closing the match on serve.

Eala entered the Berlin tournament as a wildcard competitor, adding significance to her advancement into the final four of the WTA 500 event.

The Noskova Challenge Ahead

Eala's semifinal opponent is Linda Noskova, the 21-year-old Czech player ranked world No. 13. Noskova advanced to the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Paola Badosa. The two players have met before, with Noskova defeating Eala decisively at Indian Wells last March with a 6-2, 6-0 scoreline on hard courts.

However, their history extends beyond recent professional encounters. Eala defeated Noskova during their junior careers at the 2020 French Open girls' tournament with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory. Despite the previous loss at Indian Wells, Eala acknowledged the challenge while expressing confidence in her preparation. "She's a big hitter, and she's young, but she has a lot of experience, and she's very powerful," Eala stated, indicating her awareness of Noskova's capabilities and commitment to improving her game for the rematch.

The winner of the Eala-Noskova semifinals will advance to the final, where they will face either Aryna Sabalenka or Jessica Pegula, who compete in the tournament's other semifinal.
