Alexandra Eala Defeats Zheng Qinwen in DC Open Comeback, Advances to Face Defending Champion Fernandez

Alexandra Eala mounted a dramatic comeback in her inaugural appearance at the Mubadala Citi DC Open, defeating wild card Zheng Qinwen 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the first round at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center. The World No. 28 now advances to face defending champion Leylah Fernandez, setting up a high-stakes second-round matchup on hard courts.

The Comeback Victory

Eala's path to victory required significant resilience. Zheng, the former World No. 4 now ranked No. 123, controlled much of the opening set and appeared poised for victory when she broke Eala at love while leading 5-3 in the second set. However, the Philippine player immediately broke back at love, then won six consecutive games to capture the second set and establish a commanding 4-0 lead in the third. Though Zheng managed one break of serve in the decider, Eala responded with another break to seal the match after two hours and 26 minutes.

The victory marked their first WTA Tour meeting, equalizing their overall head-to-head record at 1-1 following Zheng's three-hour triumph at the 2023 Asian Games. Eala credited a combination of mental fortitude and accumulated experience for her ability to execute the turnaround. "I think I've already had that in me," she told press Tuesday. "It's definitely a mindset that you have, but I think it's been trained through more experience competing at the higher level."

Tournament Significance and Next Challenge

Tournament officials revealed that securing Eala's participation generated substantial ticketing demand. Within one month of confirming her first Washington appearance, the ticketing team received more than 80 percent of all tournament inquiries specifically requesting Eala's matches. This response underscored the player's growing appeal in North America ahead of the upcoming US Open in August.

Eala faces a challenging second round against Fernandez, who defeated Magda Linette 6-1, 6-4 in her opening match. The two left-handers last met at the WTA 500 Stuttgart Open in April, where Fernandez won in straight sets. Eala acknowledged the difficulty ahead while emphasizing her immediate focus on recovery. "I think it's going to be a very tough match. Leylah's such an amazing player and an amazing person as well," Eala said, noting that her primary concern is arriving in peak physical condition for the late-evening matchup scheduled not earlier than 11 p.m. Manila time.
