Amanda Staveley Consortium Agrees to Buy West Ham's Gold Family Stake

Amanda Staveley's investment consortium has reached an agreement to acquire a 25.1% stake in West Ham United from the Gold family trust, marking the businesswoman's entry into English club ownership after her prominent role in Newcastle United's Saudi-backed takeover. The deal, which includes her husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi and PCP Capital Partners, comes after a previously agreed sale to Czech investor Daniel Kretinsky collapsed earlier this year.

Vanessa Gold, daughter of former West Ham chair David Gold, confirmed the family's intention to sell their shareholding to Staveley's consortium in a statement. Gold emphasized that the sale remains subject to a pre-emption process, under which existing shareholders retain the option to purchase the shares themselves before the transaction concludes. The process signals that while the agreement is finalized, regulatory and shareholder approval steps remain pending.

The Failed Kretinsky Deal

The Staveley agreement materializes following the breakdown of negotiations with Kretinsky. On June 12, Kretinsky and Vanessa Gold had agreed to a sale that would have positioned his EP Group as West Ham's largest shareholder. However, according to Gold's statement, neither the original agreement nor subsequent alternative arrangements proved viable, forcing both parties to abandon the transaction.

Staveley's Football Experience

Staveley brings substantial experience in high-level football investment. Her prominence in sports ownership stems from her leadership role in the 2021 consortium that acquired Newcastle United from Mike Ashley for £305 million, partnering with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. That acquisition transformed Newcastle into a major spending force in the transfer market. Her entry into West Ham comes at a critical juncture for the Championship club, which was relegated from the Premier League last season despite winning the Europa Conference League in 2023.

Vanessa Gold stated that her priority throughout the ownership discussions has been securing the right leadership structure to enable West Ham to return to the Premier League. She expressed confidence that Staveley, Ghodoussi, and PCP Capital Partners possess the necessary experience to guide the club toward that objective.
