The incident came to authorities' attention on December 15, 2024, when a friend of the couple reported concerns about Reaper's death to Broward County Animal Care. Armenti initially told investigators she discovered the brown-and-white tabby dead on the bathroom floor of their Fort Lauderdale apartment. However, by the time animal-care employees arrived, the cat's body had been moved to the back patio, positioned inside a plastic laundry basket. The animal was described as "stiff" with a substantial pool of blood beneath it.

Bellera provided a different account to officers, claiming he and Armenti had found the cat dead the morning after going to bed and suggested the animal might have accidentally consumed cleaning products. This explanation was contradicted by forensic findings. A licensed veterinarian conducting the necropsy through the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals concluded that Reaper suffered fatal injuries caused by extreme heat.
