Andrew Garfield Sets Conditions for Return to Spider-Man Role

Andrew Garfield has indicated he would reprise Spider-Man for a third solo film, but exclusively under unconventional creative circumstances. The actor, who played the web-slinger in two earlier films before Tom Holland assumed the role, expressed interest in exploring directions that have never been attempted in Spider-Man cinema. Speaking on The Playlist's The Discourse podcast, Garfield outlined his vision for any potential return to the character.

Garfield stated that returning to the role would require something fundamentally different from traditional Spider-Man narratives. "I would need it to be very, very odd. I would need it to be very strange, and I would need it to be completely unconventional," he explained. Rather than pursuing the conventional superhero formula, Garfield sought creative ground that feels distinctly left field—a genre or style the Spider-Man franchise has not yet explored onscreen.

When prompted to suggest specific possibilities, Garfield proposed an intriguing alternative: a road trip concept. This idea exemplifies his preference for departing from established superhero storytelling structures. The actor emphasized that any new project would need to surprise audiences with its fundamental approach rather than simply continuing Peter Parker's existing narrative arc.

The Spider-Man Multiverse Context

Garfield's potential return exists within an expanded Spider-Man universe framework. He originally portrayed Peter Parker in Sony Pictures' duology—The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. A third installment in that series was once in development but was ultimately abandoned following a strategic partnership between Sony and Marvel Studios.

In 2021, Garfield reappeared as his version of Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home, reuniting alongside Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire. The film revealed that Garfield's Peter Parker had darkened considerably following Gwen Stacy's death, abandoning restraint in combat and pursuing a destructive path. This character development could theoretically provide foundation for an unconventional future project.

Marvel Studios has demonstrated willingness to explore stories beyond the established timeline, as evidenced by upcoming projects like 2025's Fantastic Four: First Steps. Sony and Marvel's collaborative framework leaves space for Garfield's Spider-Man universe to develop alongside the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe, potentially accommodating the distinctive creative vision he seeks.
