Angels Position Two Star Pitchers as Trade Assets Ahead of Deadline

The Los Angeles Angels have made two of their most valuable young pitchers available in trade discussions as interim general manager John Mozeliak prepares for the August 3 trade deadline. Jose Soriano and Reid Detmers, both under team control through 2028, represent rare trade commodities that could yield significant returns despite their long-term contracts.

Strategic Shift Under New Leadership

Mozeliak, hired in late June following the departure of Perry Minasian, is approaching the trade deadline as a selling organization. The 30-year veteran of baseball operations—who spent 18 years as general manager of the St. Louis Cardinals—has already signaled openness to major roster changes as the Angels work to establish a foundation for sustained success.

"We are going to have to be very open-minded," Mozeliak said in comments to media. He emphasized that the organization must understand the trade market and timing as it evaluates potential deals. The Angels did not have the season they anticipated, making the deadline conversation a critical juncture for the franchise.

Why These Pitchers Matter

Soriano and Detmers carry extraordinary trade value because they are not rental players expiring at season's end. Their control through 2028 means an acquiring team would retain the pitcher for multiple seasons, a rarity at the trade deadline. That contract structure typically results in premium returns from interested clubs. Most pitchers traded before the deadline are expiring assets or short-term acquisitions; pitchers with years of control still attached rarely change hands mid-season.

Mozeliak has not ruled out trading either player, though he did not provide extensive detail on their potential availability. The decision to make them available signals the organization's willingness to reset rather than chase short-term competitiveness.

Organizational Rebuilding Plan

Mozeliak pointed to parallels between his current assignment with the Angels and his early tenure with the Cardinals in the mid-1990s, when St. Louis had endured eight consecutive seasons without postseason play. Under his leadership, the Cardinals became consistent winners, posting 15 consecutive winning seasons from 2008 through 2022, earning 10 playoff appearances and winning the 2010 World Series.

The executive emphasized that sustained success requires strong foundational elements. "Scouting and player development have to be a major force," he stated. He indicated he may make structural changes within the front office, though he has not yet begun the search for a permanent general manager. His contract with the Angels extends through December, leaving his longer-term tenure with the organization uncertain.
