Aston Villa's 17-Year-Old Striker Brian Madjo Shines in Pre-Season Despite January Playing Ban

Brian Madjo, Aston Villa's newly acquired 17-year-old striker, delivered an eye-catching performance in his first competitive glimpse, scoring twice in a 5-0 pre-season demolition of Walsall. However, the Belgian prospect remains ineligible for competitive play until January despite impressing supporters with both his physical presence and technical execution.

First Glimpse of a Physical Prospect

Standing 193 centimeters tall, Madjo presented an imposing figure during the contest, opening the scoring with a display of pure strength. After receiving a cross from midfielder Kosta Nedeljkovic from the right flank, he shrugged off his marker and finished with a first-time strike. His second goal, though partly fortunate after deflecting an Emi Buendia effort off his head into the net, demonstrated the intelligent positioning that separated him from a purely physical player—he had moved into dangerous areas ahead of the chance materializing.

Aston Villa paid an estimated 10 million pounds to acquire Madjo from French club FC Metz in January. The teenager's performance against older opponents proved less surprising once his development path is considered. During his time at Luxembourg club Racing Union's academy, Madjo never trained or competed with players his own age. Instead, academy officials placed him two age groups higher to test him consistently against physically mature athletes.

Technical Development Over Raw Talent

Racing Union academy director Delvin Skenderovic emphasized that Madjo's early challenge was not converting chances—he could have scored multiple goals in each youth match—but refining his technique and mental resilience under pressure. To address this, the academy occasionally deployed him as a midfielder, a position requiring greater ball retention and decision-making. "The thing is, physically he was always big and strong and fast," Skenderovic explained. "The problem we had to work on was his technique, his behaviour under pressure."

Skenderovic identified Madjo as possessing "elite mentality" and a relentless drive to improve. That combination of physical tools and psychological profile has prompted observers to draw parallels with Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku, though Skenderovic suggested key differences remain between the two profiles across specific technical dimensions.

The ineligibility period until January suggests Madjo's move from France involved regulatory or contractual restrictions common in youth football transfers. In the interim, the teenager will continue training and gaining experience in pre-season fixtures against older competition.
