Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender Creators Discuss Deleted Scenes and Storylines from Paramount+ Film
Avatar movie creators revealed deleted content and storylines from Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, now streaming on Paramount+.

The creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender have disclosed details about storylines and characters removed from the new film Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, which launched on Paramount+. Filmmakers Michael Dante DiMartino, Bryan Konietzko, and director Lauren Montgomery discussed their creative process, including the decision to age up the original cast and expand the narrative scope.
The New Film's Direction
Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender brings the beloved characters into their adult years, with Aang established as a fully realized Avatar but burdened by his unique status as the last surviving airbender. The narrative introduces new antagonists called The Denied, an anti-bender faction whose emergence sets the plot in motion. Through their conflict with this group, Aang and his companions discover evidence of a lost airbender named Sonam who possessed an ancient staff of considerable power.
The story expands when the team awakens Tagah, an ancient airbender frozen atop a mountain, voiced by Dave Bautista. According to the film's plot, Tagah reveals that thousands of years prior, Sonam granted him and others the ability to bend air through her staff. The revelation forces Team Avatar to confront both Tagah and The Denied, as both seek to control the staff, threatening the fragile peace established across the world.
Creative Evolution and Studio Priorities
DiMartino explained that after Avatar Studios was established at Nickelodeon, the creative team prioritized film development. The decision to center the story on the original characters emerged naturally, as they remained the most recognizable and beloved figures from the franchise. The choice to age them reflected a desire to feel "bigger and different" while serving as a genuine extension of the narrative already told in the original series.
While specific deleted ideas were not enumerated in detail, Konietzko indicated that though remaining passionate about the Avatar universe, he held differing perspectives on revisiting the original cast, suggesting creative differences shaped the final product. The filmmakers worked with Montgomery to balance fan expectations with fresh storytelling approaches.
