Barcelona Recruits Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund on Five-Year Deal

Barcelona announced the signing of Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund on a five-year contract extending through 2031, marking the Spanish champion's latest acquisition to rebuild its attacking lineup following Robert Lewandowski's departure to Major League Soccer. The 22-year-old German forward reunites with manager Hansi Flick, who provided his international debut with Germany in 2021 when Adeyemi scored in his first appearance against Armenia.

The Reunion and Manager Confidence

Flick has long tracked Adeyemi's development. During his time at Bayern Munich, the manager faced the forward when he played for Salzburg and recognized his exceptional physical attributes. "He has enormous speed and good first touch. His strengths are especially in one-on-one situations. He is a player who can make the difference," Flick stated previously.

Adeyemi acknowledged the manager's influence on his decision. "Hansi told me this is an important step, that this is a different club—the biggest in the world—and asked if I was ready," the forward explained at his presentation. "I said yes, that I would play wherever the team needed me." The 19-year-old Bayern Munich player had also pursued Adeyemi before, with the Salzburg sporting director confirming Barcelona and other major clubs had submitted offers.

Speed and Versatility Define His Profile

Adeyemi's primary asset is his explosive pace. The forward reached 36.65 kilometers per hour in 2023, setting the Bundesliga speed record, and can cover 30 meters in 3.78 seconds. Former Borussia Dortmund teammate and now Real Madrid player Jude Bellingham acknowledged this strength: "We trust his one-on-one play. He flies." The Barcelona signing can operate across the front line—left wing, right wing, or as a center forward—providing tactical flexibility for Flick's setup.

However, Adeyemi faced an inconsistent final season at Dortmund and was omitted from Germany's World Cup squad. He recognized this during his unveiling: "Honestly, I couldn't believe the interest from Barcelona. I know what I can give, and last season wasn't my best. That's why I'm very grateful for this opportunity." Barcelona has simultaneously recruited English winger Anthony Gordon from Newcastle and secured the long-term departure of veteran striker Lewandowski, who scored 120 goals across four seasons before joining Chicago Fire.
