Birmingham City and Huddersfield Town will meet in a pre-season friendly in Portugal on Friday, kicking off their preparations for the upcoming Championship and League One seasons respectively. The encounter represents the first competitive action for both clubs under their respective management setups, with distinct aspirations following contrasting campaigns in 2025-26.

Birmingham Seek to Build on Championship Status

Birmingham City secured promotion to the Championship at the first attempt under Chris Davies and finished their inaugural second-tier campaign in 10th place with 64 points accumulated across 46 matches. The Blues netted 57 goals while conceding 56, demonstrating offensive capability alongside defensive vulnerabilities. Despite faltering during an eight-game stretch between late February and early April that produced six defeats, Birmingham recovered with a positive run of five consecutive games without loss, winning three of those encounters.

Davies and his squad now target a more sustained top-six challenge in their second Championship season. The Portugal camp represents the beginning of that mission, with further friendlies scheduled against Crewe Alexandra and Northampton Town before the official campaign begins in August.

Huddersfield Embark on New Era with Fresh Leadership

Huddersfield Town endured significant upheaval at managerial level, cycling through Michael Duff, Jon Worthington, Lee Grant, and Liam Manning across the last two seasons before Jon Stead and Martin Drury oversaw the close of 2025-26. The Terriers finished ninth in League One, eight points adrift of the playoff positions. Following that disappointment, the club opted to hand Martin Drury permanent managerial control as they pursue a third consecutive season in League One with renewed ambitions for automatic promotion and a return to the Championship.

Huddersfield have already undertaken significant transfer activity during the summer window. Their Portugal pre-season camp signals the beginning of a fresh project, with hopes that squad rebuilding and Drury's appointment will catalyse a stronger challenge this term.
