Boardmasters Festival Draws 46,000 Music Fans to Cornwall with Rising Artists Alongside Major Headliners

Boardmasters festival is set to welcome more than 46,000 music fans to Watergate Bay in Cornwall, featuring approximately 90 artists performing across the weekend. The event combines headline acts including Mercury Prize nominee Loyle Carner and Brit Award-nominated jungle artist Nia Archives with emerging performers curated by BBC Introducing.

Festival Lineup and Artist Development

This year's Boardmasters represents a significant showcase for artists at different career stages. The headline artists—Loyle Carner, Joy Crookes, and Nia Archives—all benefited from BBC Introducing support early in their careers through radio airplay and festival opportunities before achieving mainstream recognition. The partnership between Boardmasters and BBC Introducing has expanded to include curation of The View stage, providing additional visibility for unsigned and emerging acts.

Among the rising performers are three South West-based artists making notable festival appearances. Essy Sparrow, winner of the inaugural Boardmasters Breaking competition, will open the main stage on Sunday, selected from nearly 700 applicants by BBC Introducing in the South West. The indie-folk artist has built a following of approximately 38,000 across social media through authentic songwriting and independent music production. Abbie Piper from Cornwall is performing on The View stage after releasing her debut EP earlier this year and securing back-to-back tracks of the week on BBC Introducing in the South West. Peri Rae, added to the lineup just one week before the festival, is returning to music with a heavier, grittier sound on The View stage.

Festival Attendance and Safety Considerations

Festival organisers have prioritised attendee safety following previous incidents. Director Rob Spring stated the team had worked extensively to ensure both festival-goers and the local Newquay community felt secure during the event. The festival maintains close collaboration with Devon and Cornwall Police, RNLI, coastguard, ambulance services, and local councils. Seven people were hospitalised after a crowd surge in 2024, highlighting the importance of these safety measures moving forward.

First-time attendees express enthusiasm about the combination of music, camping experience, and Cornish seaside location. Young visitors travelling from across the United Kingdom report planning to arrive early to secure tent spaces and remain in groups throughout the festival. Some attendees highlight the appeal of enjoying the beach and watching surfing during quieter moments between performances, integrating the coastal setting into the overall festival experience.
