Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left wrist Thursday, effectively ending his chances of returning to play this season. The procedure was performed by Dr. Matthew Leibman at Newton-Wellesley Surgery Center in Wellesley, Massachusetts. Interim manager Chad Tracy acknowledged that conservative treatment had failed to resolve the persistent wrist issue.

The Injury and Treatment

Casas has battled the wrist injury for an extended period throughout the season. Tracy explained that the team initially pursued conservative treatment to address the problem, but when that approach proved ineffective, surgical intervention became necessary. The timing of the decision came after Casas consulted with a hand specialist at Fenway Park earlier in the week.

The 26-year-old was sidelined in July when the wrist injury forced his shutdown from competition. This surgical procedure now marks the likely end to his 2024 campaign, though the team has not officially announced the closure of his season.

A History of Setbacks

Casas' injury troubles extend well beyond this year. In 2023, he showed tremendous promise as a rookie, finishing third in American League Rookie of the Year voting after posting 24 home runs and 65 RBIs across 132 games. However, injuries have severely limited his availability since then. Last season, a ruptured left patellar tendon ended his campaign on May 2. During this year's Spring Training, an abdominal strain hindered his early-season preparation, and later in July came the wrist injury that has now required surgery.

The injury streak reached back into 2024, when Casas missed 99 games due to a torn rib cage. Since the start of 2023, Casas has appeared in only 92 games out of the hundreds that have been played. His career statistics stand at a .241 batting average with 45 home runs and 120 RBIs across 251 games—numbers that understate his potential given the games he has missed.
