Cameron Norrie Ends Six-Match Losing Streak with Victory in Mexico

Cameron Norrie ended a six-match losing streak on the ATP Tour with a straight-sets victory over Aleksandar Kovacevic at the Mifel Open in Mexico. The British player defeated the world number 95 ranked American 6-4 6-1, claiming his first win since the Madrid Open in April.

Norrie, currently ranked 39th on the ATP circuit, had endured a challenging period that included a first-round exit at Wimbledon to qualifier Michael Zheng and a retirement from his French Open match in May due to a rib injury. The Los Cabos tournament held particular significance for the British competitor, marking the venue where he secured his maiden ATP title three years earlier.

Despite the decisive scoreline, the opening set proved competitive. Norrie found his serve broken twice, including in the opening game, forcing him to battle back against Kovacevic's pressure. However, the 28-year-old regrouped and took control in the second set, dropping just five points on serve while breaking his opponent twice to advance to the second round. He next faces either James Duckworth of Australia or American Aidan Mayo.

Following the match, Norrie expressed relief at returning to the winner's circle. "I'm so happy," he stated. "I hadn't had a win in a while. I've been battling some injuries and a bit of confidence, so I was a bit nervous. But I played well in the big moments and managed to stay calm." His composed performance in crucial moments proved decisive as he sealed victory in just over 30 minutes of play.

The breakthrough comes as fellow British player Katie Boulter encountered disappointment at the Mubadala DC Open in Washington DC, where she fell to American Ashlyn Krueger 3-6 6-2 6-2 in the first round. Boulter's loss extended her own winless run to four consecutive matches, marking her first tournament appearance following an early exit from Wimbledon.
