Canyon Lake Water Level Surges to Highest Point in Years as Flooding Triggers Public Health Warnings

Canyon Lake in Texas has filled to its highest levels in years following heavy rainfall, but the rapid rise has created significant challenges for water quality and recreational access. The lake climbed from 60.9% capacity on July 14 to over 81% by July 17, surpassing its growth from July 2025 floods and marking the highest water level since 2023.

The dramatic increase occurred as the Central Texas Hill Country experienced severe flooding. The Guadalupe River surged to dangerous heights, and inflow into Canyon Lake accelerated dramatically within just 48 hours. The water rise, while beneficial for long-term reservoir levels compared to previous years, arrived with a significant drawback: massive quantities of debris, sediment, and other hazardous materials entered the lake during the flood event.

Recreation and Access Restrictions

Comal County announced that all nine county-maintained boat ramps would remain closed indefinitely. Swimming, kayaking, and other water activities have been strongly discouraged as officials evaluate safety conditions. County officials stated that visible surface debris represents only part of the problem—dangerous obstacles and sediment remain suspended throughout the water column, requiring time to assess before recreational activities can safely resume.

Water Quality and Public Health Response

The influx of debris and sediment has elevated turbidity levels in Canyon Lake, prompting immediate regulatory action. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality ordered multiple communities served by the water system to implement boil water precautions. Texas Water Company, which operates the Canyon Lake Shores Treatment Plant, confirmed that elevated turbidity at the facility's water intake led to the notice being issued in accordance with state drinking water safety requirements.

Affected communities include the City of Bulverde, City of Blanco water customers, and residential areas such as Canyon Lake Shores, Canyon Lake Acres, Canyon Lake Island, River Crossing, and Hidden Trails, among others. The boil water notice will remain in effect while treatment operations work to reduce sediment levels and restore compliance with state safety standards.
