Charlie Woods bounced back from a shaky start to record his best first-round score in three consecutive U.S. Junior Amateur appearances, shooting 5-over 76 on Saucon Valley's Old Course in Pennsylvania. The 17-year-old remains in contention for Wednesday's match-play round, currently positioned three shots outside the advancing positions after the opening 18 holes.

Dramatic Turnaround

Woods began his round with immediate trouble, recording a bogey on his opening hole followed by a triple-bogey at the par-4 second. Additional bogeys at the fourth and fifth holes left him at 6-over through five holes, a deficit that threatened to replicate his struggles from previous appearances at the championship.

The turning point arrived at the sixth hole, where Woods logged his first birdie. From there, he steadied his play considerably, combining five consecutive pars with another birdie at the 18th to card a final score of 76—a marked improvement over his previous first-round efforts. Two years ago, Woods opened with an 82 at Oakland Hills; last year he posted an 81 at Trinity Forest.

Path Forward

To advance to match play, Woods must climb into the top 64 competitors during Tuesday's second round at Saucon Valley's Grace Course, or secure a position via playoff if tied for 64th. Currently three shots back of qualifying positions, he remains mathematically alive heading into the second round.

The tournament, now bearing Tiger Woods' name, features 264 competitors vying for the championship. First-round leader Sohan Patel posted a 5-under 66 on the Old Course, while defending champion Hamilton Coleman fired a 6-over 76, one shot ahead of the younger Woods.

Woods has verbally committed to Florida State University for 2027 and will compete alongside seventh-ranked amateur Miles Russell, who carded a 69 in the opening round.
