Chelsea have secured a verbal agreement to sign attacking midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117 million, establishing a new club transfer record. Personal terms are finalized on a six-year contract through 2032 with an optional 12-month extension, with the player's medical examination scheduled for Monday. Record-Breaking Fee and Contract Details

The £117 million bid represents Chelsea's most expensive signing, eclipsing the €121 million (£106 million) paid to Benfica for midfielder Enzo Fernandez in January 2023. The agreement also surpasses the British record of £116 million that Manchester City agreed with Nottingham Forest for midfielder Elliot Anderson earlier this summer. Rogers will commit to Chelsea until 2032, with the option of a further 12 months built into the arrangement.

Rogers, aged 23, has chosen Chelsea as his preferred destination despite interest from Arsenal, who were also pursuing the England international. The prospect of working with Xabi Alonso and the club's broader project proved decisive in his selection. Arsenal had positioned Rogers as a top attacking target, but the midfielder's preference for Chelsea's vision secured the move. Rogers' existing Aston Villa contract was set to run until 2030 after he signed fresh terms in November 2024, which adjusted his salary to reflect his standing in Unai Emery's squad.

Rogers' Performance and Background

Rogers has established himself as one of the Premier League's most productive attacking midfielders during his time at Aston Villa. In 125 appearances across all competitions, he has scored 31 goals and registered 29 assists. During the 2025-26 campaign, he contributed 14 goals and 12 assists in 55 matches as Villa qualified for the Champions League and won the Europa League. The midfielder arrived at Villa Park from Middlesbrough in February 2024 for an initial £7 million plus additional fees, with Middlesbrough retaining a 20 percent sell-on clause.

Rogers earned his first senior England call-up in November 2024 and has featured in all six of his country's World Cup matches to date, including starts in the final group-stage fixture against Panama and the semi-final defeat to Argentina, where he provided the assist for Anthony Gordon's goal.
