Clacton by-election sets record with 34 candidates as Farage faces unexpected competition
The clacton by-election will feature 34 candidates on August 13, breaking records for by-election entries in modern times.

The clacton by-election on August 13 will see a record-breaking 34 candidates compete for the Essex seat, with Nigel Farage standing as the sole representative from Westminster's major political parties. Farage's resignation as MP triggered the contest following scrutiny over his finances and parliamentary investigation. The number of candidates far exceeds the previous record of 26, set during the Haltemprice and Howden by-election in 2008.
The Candidate Field
The confirmed list includes 20 independent candidates, three from the Monster Raving Loony Party, and a collection of prominent non-traditional contenders. Labour, the Conservative Party, the Liberal Democrats, and the Greens have all opted out of the race, leaving Farage as the only candidate from a Westminster party. This unusual situation means voters will face an exceptionally crowded ballot paper when polls open.
Among the high-profile challengers is Count Binface, a comedic character portrayed by writer and comedian Jon Harvey. Actor-turned-politician Laurence Fox is also standing. The Statement of Persons Nominated was publicly posted at Clacton Town Hall and published on Tendring District Council's website.
Polling Reveals Unexpected Challenge
Recent polling data suggests Farage faces more significant opposition than typical by-election scenarios. An Ipsos survey found that 33 percent of British adults surveyed would prefer Count Binface to win, compared to just 21 percent backing Farage. The poll also revealed concerning approval ratings for the Reform UK leader: only 26 percent of respondents expressed satisfaction with his leadership, while 63 percent expressed dissatisfaction.
The same survey indicated that Reform UK's national support has declined from 34 percent in June to 26 percent currently, with Labour at 24 percent and the Conservatives at 18 percent. When asked about potential prime ministers, respondents showed greater confidence in Labour's Andy Burnham, with 30 percent viewing him favorably compared to 16 percent for Farage.
The decline in support for both Farage and Reform appears linked to financial controversies surrounding the party. The organisation received substantial donations from Bitcoin billionaire Christopher Harborne, including a £5 million personal gift to Farage that he failed to register with parliamentary authorities. Farage has claimed the gift qualified as personal rather than requiring parliamentary declaration.
