Clacton By-Election Shatters Record with 34 Candidates, Including Comedy Rivals to Farage
A record 34 clacton election candidates are competing in the August 13 by-election triggered by Nigel Farage's resignation.

The Clacton constituency by-election has attracted a record-breaking 34 candidates competing for the Essex seat vacated by Nigel Farage. Among the contenders are 20 independents, joke candidates from the Monster Raving Loony Party, and comedian Count Binface—who leads Farage in recent voter preference polls. The August 13 election marks the highest candidate count in modern by-election history, surpassing the previous record of 26 set in 2008.

The Record-Breaking Field
Farage triggered the by-election following his resignation as MP on July 7, citing increased scrutiny over his finances and a parliamentary investigation, though he remains the sole candidate from a Westminster party. The Labour Party, Conservative Party, Liberal Democrats, and Green Party all declined to field candidates in the contest. The full roster includes three Monster Raving Loony Party candidates—Nick The Incredible Flying Brick, Howling Laud Hope, and Baron Von Thunderclap—alongside actor-turned-politician Laurence Fox and representatives from smaller parties including the Social Democratic Party and Freedom Alliance.
Polling Reveals Unexpected Challenge
Recent polling from Ipsos presents a striking picture for the Reform UK leader. When asked which candidate they would prefer to win, 33 percent of respondents favoured Count Binface compared to just 21 percent backing Farage—a nearly 60 percent polling advantage for the comedian. The survey also revealed broader dissatisfaction with Farage's leadership: 63 percent of respondents expressed dissatisfaction while only 26 percent were satisfied. Notably, 45 percent of voters indicated they either wanted neither candidate to win or remained undecided about their preference.
The same polling showed Reform UK support at 26 percent nationally, ahead of Labour's 24 percent and the Conservative Party's 18 percent. However, this represents a decline from June figures when Reform polled at 34 percent, suggesting momentum has shifted since Farage's financial disclosures became public.
Financial Controversy and Declining Support
The by-election campaign centres partly on questions surrounding Farage's £5 million personal donation from Bitcoin billionaire Christopher Harborne, who resides in Thailand. Farage claimed the funds constituted a personal gift not requiring parliamentary declaration, though parliamentary regulations typically mandate new MPs register all financial benefits received within 12 months of election. This controversy appears to have contributed to Reform's polling decline since June, when the party held stronger support across the electorate.
