Claudia Winkleman Steps Down from BBC Chat Show After One Series

Television presenter Claudia Winkleman has announced her departure from her BBC chat show after completing just one seven-episode series. The host cited anxiety as the primary reason for stepping away, despite receiving praise from the broadcaster and landing interviews with major celebrities including Jeff Goldblum, Lisa Kudrow, and Rachel Zegler.

Winkleman launched the show in February as a temporary Friday night offering on BBC One, filling the slot normally occupied by Graham Norton's eponymous programme during his production hiatus. The series, produced by So Television—the company co-founded by Norton himself—ran through spring with an average combined audience of between 1.5 million and 2 million viewers per episode.

In her statement, Winkleman acknowledged the opportunity and thanked the production team, yet revealed her internal struggle. "Sometimes you have to try something to see how it fits, and I realised I was just too nervous to enjoy it," she explained. She added that her existing commitments—including hosting The Traitors and departing from Strictly Come Dancing—provide sufficient fulfilment, and suggested a return to chat show hosting might occur in the future.

Critical reception proved mixed throughout the run. While some reviewers praised Winkleman's warmth and described the show as entertaining and full of banter, others characterised it as messy and underwhelming. The final two episodes featured lower-profile bookings, including a Mr Blobby appearance and a compilation edition. Despite these challenges, BBC entertainment director Ed Havard stated the corporation "fully respects" Winkleman's decision and confirmed she will return later in the year when The Celebrity Traitors launches its new season.
