Scientists have determined that extreme weather conditions fueling major wildfires across Spain and France are directly amplified by climate change, with global heating making hot, dry, and windy weather at least 20 times more likely in Spain and twice as likely in France. The analysis, conducted by researchers from the World Weather Attribution consortium, identifies human-caused carbon pollution as a primary driver behind the continent's escalating wildfire crisis.
Climate Change and Fire Risk
The research focuses on conditions that create severe wildfire potential, measured using "daily severity ratings"—a metric that assesses how destructive a fire will become if ignited. The extreme heat and drought stoking the blazes would have been far less probable without the additional warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels. A parallel study found that the intense heatwave at the end of June, which killed an estimated 20,000 people across Europe, could not have occurred without the extra atmospheric heat trapped by carbon pollution.
Dr. Clair Barnes, a research associate at Imperial College London and part of the World Weather Attribution study team, emphasized the severity of the situation: the fires are occurring unusually early in the season, and with additional heatwaves predicted, the conditions represent "extremely scary findings" about the escalating impacts of human-caused warming.
Weather Whiplash and Smoke Impacts
Western Europe's wildfire season has been intensified by what scientists call "whiplash conditions"—a wet winter and spring that boosted vegetation growth, followed by extreme summer heat and drought that dried out the accumulated plant matter, creating abundant fuel for fires.
