Community Galas Across Britain Celebrate Local Pride Through Fundraising and Awards

Community gala celebrations across Britain are demonstrating the enduring appeal of local festivals and awards ceremonies that unite residents around shared values. From traditional highland parades to industry recognition events, these gatherings are driving fundraising efforts and celebrating grassroots achievement.

Wick's Record-Breaking Gala Week

The Scottish coastal town of Wick has launched its annual Gala Week with a procession that drew considerable public participation and charitable donations. The opening festivities featured a formal crowning ceremony for Gala Queen Raegan Ross, who was selected by outgoing queen Ashlynn Ross and presented alongside attendants Iona Campbell and Summer McLeod. The event included remarks from Eric Baijal of BBM Solicitors, who addressed the assembled crowd on themes of community cohesion.

The street parade comprised eight decorated floats and more than 50 registered walking groups, representing a notable increase in entries compared to previous years. Collections during the procession night generated over £16,500—a significant rise from historical totals. Committee chairperson Donna Plowman attributed the success to favourable weather conditions, enthusiastic public turnout, and financial support from local businesses. The fundraising achievement was made possible by volunteers who counted donations at the youth club following the event.

The week-long calendar includes additional events such as a coffee morning, competitive dog show, family quiz night, a kippers barbecue at the town's boating facility, and a traditional fireworks display as the week's conclusion. Wick Provost Jan McEwan commended the parade's production quality and the warmth extended by spectators to participants.

Recognition Across the Pub Industry

Beyond traditional civic festivals, galas are serving as platforms for industry recognition. The Proper Pubs Awards Gala, scheduled for July 30 in Chesterfield, will honour outstanding community contributions from 48 finalist pubs selected from a network of 200 establishments across the United Kingdom. Two Bolton pubs—The Lamb and The Alma—have advanced to the final stage of judging.

The Lamb earned shortlisting across three categories: Community Pub of the Year, Gaming Pub of the Year, and an Outstanding Achievement Award for operator Martine Longworth. The Alma was selected as a finalist in the Entertainment Pub of the Year category. Nathan Wall, managing director of Proper Pubs, highlighted the organisation's role in facilitating community connection and charitable initiatives. The division has demonstrated commitment to social causes, having gathered 17,500 selection boxes and raised £80,255 for Claire House Hospice during the 2025 Christmas period. Additional efforts include food donations equivalent to a week's meals for 1,300 people and participation in a nationwide defibrillator installation programme.
