Cyril Blais, Citroën Formula E Team Principal, Dies at 46

Cyril Blais, the 46-year-old Team Principal directing Citroën's Formula E programme, has passed away. Monaco Sports Group, the operational entity managing Citroën's racing entry, announced his death in a joint statement released Monday. Blais had overseen the team's transition from Maserati to Citroën this season, guiding drivers Jean-Éric Vergne and Nick Cassidy.

Leadership Role and Career Path

Blais held the position of Team Principal at Monaco Sports Group, the structure responsible for running Citroën's Formula E operations during the current championship season. Before this role, he had managed Maserati MSG's racing programme following his appointment in autumn 2023, replacing James Rossiter. His racing career spanned multiple categories, beginning with roles at Manor Motorsport and Arden in Formula 2 and Formula 3, where he earned recognition as an engineer alongside drivers including a future Formula E competitor.

His academic foundation included a master's degree in vehicle dynamics from Kingston University. Earlier in his professional racing career, he worked as an engineer for Mahindra between 2019 and 2021 before joining Monaco Sports Group in an engineering capacity. Throughout nearly a decade in Formula E, Blais became known as a respected figure valued for his technical competence and calm demeanour within the paddock.

Achievements and Team Impact

Under Blais's direction, Maserati MSG achieved notable race victories despite operational challenges. The team scored wins at Jakarta and secured an unexpected victory at Tokyo through a strategic pit-stop decision, where driver Maximilian Guenther benefited from a red-flag restart. Earlier this year, the operation demonstrated tactical boldness by bringing Stoffel Vandoorne into the pit-boost window unusually early, capitalizing on race circumstances to secure another victory.

The motorsport community responded with tributes. Beth Paretta, Chief Executive of Citroën's Formula E team, stated that many team members had collaborated with Blais for several years and praised his firm belief in the programme. Xavier Chardon, Citroën's leadership, described Blais as playing a major role in the brand's Formula E initiative from its inception.
