Daily Echo reports Bournemouth Women secure promising young fullback from Southampton
Daily Echo reports Bournemouth Women have signed 19-year-old fullback Issy Watts from Southampton as their opening summer recruit.

Bournemouth Women have announced the signing of 19-year-old fullback Issy Watts from Southampton, marking the club's first summer recruitment move. Watts brings experience from WSL2 competition and a decade of development at the south coast club, joining a Cherries side undergoing significant expansion.
Watts' Development Journey
The Christchurch-based defender joined Southampton at under-10 level and progressed through their academy system before signing her first professional contract last summer. She accumulated 17 senior appearances for Saints, including nine in WSL2 during the 2025-26 season, as Southampton finished fifth in the second tier. Watts departed the club following the expiry of her contract after the conclusion of that campaign.
Club Ambitions and Local Roots
Watts expressed enthusiasm about joining Bournemouth, highlighting the club's strategic direction. "The club has massive ambitions for the women's game and for the future," she told the club's official channels. "Growing up, I went to Vitality Stadium to watch a few games with my dad and had a few AFC Bournemouth kits when I was younger. It's my local team." The fullback emphasized that securing a move to an ambitious project was central to her decision, stating she wanted to "pave my pathway and go with them."
Club Philosophy on Development
Bruce Suraci, head of women's football, highlighted several qualities that influenced the signing. "She has a strong athletic profile, the ability to attack and defend in one-on-one situations, and she fits well with our playing philosophy," Suraci explained. He also noted Watts' "outstanding character" and professional attitude. Notably, Suraci emphasized the club's commitment to supporting neurodivergent players, referencing Watts' public disclosure of living with autism. "As a club, we pride ourselves on our approach to working with neurodivergent individuals, and we believe we can work together with Issy to help unlock her full potential," he added. As a local player, Watts also holds potential to become a role model for young female supporters of AFC Bournemouth.
Watts joins ten retained players in the Cherries squad for the upcoming season, part of a broader strengthening effort that includes seven new staff appointments aimed at establishing the club as WSL-ready.
