Tensions have escalated between the camps of heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois and challenger Fabio Wardley ahead of their contracted rematch, with Dubois' advisor Sam Jones questioning the timing while Wardley's manager Mike Ofo insists the bout will proceed. The disagreement centers on whether Wardley should pursue an immediate title challenge following his loss in Manchester or take a comeback fight first.

The Rematch Clause Dispute

Wardley activated a rematch clause after Dubois claimed the WBO heavyweight title with an 11th-round stoppage victory. The Ipswich boxer had floored Dubois twice early in their May encounter before being halted against the ropes in a dramatic finish.

Jones told Sky Sports that while the rematch clause is contractually sound, he views an immediate return as potentially dangerous for Wardley, who sustained what he characterizes as significant punishment. Jones suggested that Wardley might prefer fighting for less money in a tune-up bout rather than facing Dubois again immediately, despite the financial appeal of a free world title shot.

Wardley's Camp Responds

Ofo rejected the characterization of the rematch as a "free shot," pointing out that Dubois had previously lost to Oleksandr Usyk before capturing the WBO crown. Wardley's manager emphasized that his fighter sustained only cosmetic damage in the first contest and remains confident of victory in a rematch.

Ofo stated that Wardley has no concussion or major injuries and questioned whether Jones fully understood the situation. He predicted that Wardley, having learned from tactical mistakes in their first encounter, would produce a knockout performance second time around.

Dubois' Confidence

Despite the debate over the rematch's timing, Jones maintained confidence in Dubois' superiority. He acknowledged Wardley's exceptional rise through the professional ranks given his limited amateur background, but asserted that Dubois possesses better fundamentals, greater punching power, and superior strength—factors he believes will lead to a faster victory if the rematch proceeds.
