David Austin, Chairman of Renowned Rose Grower, Dies at 67 from Rare Brain Disease

David J.C. Austin, chairman of the internationally recognised David Austin Roses business, has died at his Shropshire home aged 67 following a diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a rare neurological condition that causes progressive brain damage. The horticultural community, including BBC Gardeners' World presenter Monty Don, paid tribute to his stewardship of the family enterprise over more than three decades.

Austin joined the Albrighton-based nursery in 1990, following in the footsteps of his father David C.H. Austin, who founded the business. During his tenure as chairman spanning 30 years, he oversaw the continued development and global recognition of the company's rose cultivation programme. His children—Richard, James, and Olivia—described their father in a statement as fundamentally a gardener who carried his grandfather's vision forward with humility and responsibility, consistently prioritising the roses and the people behind the business above personal interests.

Monty Don, the 71-year-old presenter who works alongside Adam Frost and Frances Tophill on the BBC programme, expressed his sorrow through a personal tribute. "I am so sorry to hear this," he wrote. "But what legacy he leaves—millions of exquisite roses that will live on for so many, enriching all our lives." The Royal Horticultural Society similarly acknowledged the loss, stating they were deeply saddened and sending condolences to the Austin family. David Austin Roses confirmed the business will continue under its existing leadership team, working closely with the next generation of the Austin family.

The tributes emphasised Austin's character beyond his professional achievements. His children characterised him as kind and modest, possessed of a playful spirit, and notably dignified in facing his illness. Social media responses from gardeners reflected the personal connection many had developed with the brand and its rose varieties. One enthusiast wrote of examining her David Austin roses nightly with renewed appreciation, while another suggested naming a future rose variety in his memory.
