David Benavidez Declines Usyk Challenge, Focuses on Cruiserweight Unification
David Benavidez has declined a potential matchup with heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, stating he lacks the experience needed.

David Benavidez has rejected the opportunity to face unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, despite efforts by powerbroker Turki Alalshikh to arrange the fight. Instead, the 29-year-old newly minted three-weight champion is prioritizing a cruiserweight unification with fellow 200-pound titlist Noel Mikaelian.

The Usyk Decision
Though Alalshikh approached representatives close to Benavidez with the proposal, the cruiserweight champion made clear he will not move up to heavyweight at this stage of his career. Benavidez expressed respect for Usyk but emphasized his lack of readiness for such a significant step up in competition. "I have a lot of respect for Usyk, and I'm not ready for that right now," Benavidez told Luis Parra. He left open the possibility of a future encounter should Usyk drop to cruiserweight, but ruled out any near-term challenge at the heavier division.
Usyk recently delivered a lackluster performance against Rico Verhoeven, stopping him in the 11th round, yet the Ukrainian remains widely regarded as the division's top talent. The heavyweight champion faces his own mandated obligations, having been ordered to defend his WBC title against interim champion Agit Kabayel—a fight he must either pursue or relinquish the belt to avoid.
Cruiserweight Consolidation
Benavidez's focus on cruiserweight unification reflects his comfort at 200 pounds following his emphatic sixth-round knockout victory over Gilberto Ramirez last month. That win captured the WBO and WBA titles, securing his status as a three-weight world champion. He has since persuaded the WBC to install him as the mandatory challenger, positioning him for negotiations with Mikaelian that are reportedly in advanced stages.
The potential unification bout would likely sideline Australian Jai Opetaia, the Zuffa cruiserweight champion who holds a record of 30-0 with 23 knockouts. Opetaia, who boxed once this year against Brandon Glanton in March, has publicly stated his ambition to become undisputed cruiserweight champion and is actively pursuing fights with the division's other title holders.
