David Spade Reveals Chris Farley Resented Losing The Cable Guy Role to Jim Carrey

David Spade disclosed on his podcast that Chris Farley harbored disappointment about losing The Cable Guy to Jim Carrey, a consequence of his contractual obligations to Paramount Pictures. According to Spade, Farley was originally attached to the title role when Columbia Pictures acquired the screenplay in 1994, with the actor set to earn $3 million from the production. However, Farley's simultaneous commitment to a two-picture deal with Paramount—which included Tommy Boy—forced him to relinquish the Cable Guy opportunity in favor of filming Black Sheep alongside Spade.

In a recent episode of his Fly on the Wall podcast, Spade recounted that Farley's reaction to the scheduling conflict was notably unenthusiastic. When asked whether Farley had accepted the situation gracefully, Spade stated plainly: "He didn't love it." The Saturday Night Live veteran also revealed that before Black Sheep production became official, Farley attempted to subtly postpone the project, suggesting to Spade that they could delay filming until the following summer if the script wasn't ready. Spade acknowledged how transparent this delaying tactic was, though the strategy ultimately proved unsuccessful.

The Cable Guy eventually went to Jim Carrey, who faced Matthew Broderick in the 1996 film. Despite Carrey's star power and his then-unprecedented upfront payment of $20 million, the movie became the first major box office disappointment of his career. Meanwhile, Farley and Spade proceeded with Black Sheep, a comedy that capitalized on the commercial success of their prior collaboration Tommy Boy, released the previous year. The Paramount two-picture deal had effectively sealed Farley's fate, preventing him from participating in what would have been Carrey's venture into darker, more satirical comedy.
