DNA Evidence Reopens Hunt for Diane Sindall's Killer After 40 Years

Detectives in northwest England are intensifying efforts to identify the person behind a 1986 sexual assault and murder after new DNA testing exonerated a man who spent nearly four decades in prison for the crime. Diane Sindall, a 21-year-old florist, was killed in Birkenhead, Merseyside, with her real killer still unidentified as investigators approach the 40th anniversary of her death.

The Case and Wrongful Conviction

Sindall was attacked in the early hours of August 2, 1986, after her van ran out of petrol near Borough Road. She had been working a shift at the Wellington pub to save money for her wedding when she left at approximately 23:45. Witnesses reported seeing her walking along Borough Road with what may have been a petrol canister shortly after midnight. Her severely brutalised and partially naked body was discovered in an alley off the main road the following morning.

Peter Sullivan was convicted of her murder in 1987 and remained imprisoned until his conviction was quashed last year. The Criminal Cases Review Commission, the UK body responsible for investigating potential miscarriages of justice, ordered fresh DNA testing of biological samples recovered from Sindall's body during the original 1986 investigation. Testing in 2023 produced a new DNA profile that conclusively did not match Sullivan, leading to his release after 38 years in custody.

Active Investigation and Public Appeal

Merseyside Police have reopened the investigation with a dedicated team reviewing the original case file, re-interviewing witnesses, and pursuing new leads. Detective Superintendent Rachel Wilson stated that identifying Sindall's actual killer remains her priority. Since the case reopened, detectives have received more than 200 calls from the public and have eliminated 575 individuals, with 32 currently under review.

The force has launched searches of the national DNA database using the newly recovered profile, though no matches have yet been found. Partially burned clothing belonging to Sindall was recovered on Bidston Hill, approximately two miles from the murder scene, within 48 hours of her death. Crime Stoppers is offering a £20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of her actual killer. A memorial service is scheduled for August 2 at her memorial on Borough Road.

The unsolved murder had profound community impact, prompting the creation of the Wirral Rape Crisis Counselling Service in response to the sexual violence element of the crime. This organisation later evolved into RASA Merseyside in 2002 and now provides specialist support services to thousands of survivors across the region.
