The Earthquakes Unfold
The first earthquake, measuring 7.2 magnitude, struck at 6:04pm local time with its epicentre in Yaracuy state at a depth of approximately 22 kilometres. The more powerful second quake followed within less than a minute, with its epicentre located roughly 23 kilometres southeast of Yumare at a depth of about 10 kilometres. Residents across Venezuela and neighbouring Colombia reported feeling strong tremors, and more than 20 aftershocks have been recorded since the initial impacts.
Damage and Casualties
Multiple buildings have collapsed across Caracas, with rescue workers extracting survivors from rubble under challenging conditions. In the Chacao municipality alone, authorities extracted 18 survivors from a single collapsed structure. The coastal state of Falcon reported 22 people injured with 15 adults missing. The US Geological Survey assessed that high casualties and extensive damage are probable, with a 44 percent probability of more than 10,000 fatalities and a 30 percent chance of exceeding 100,000 deaths. Maiquetía airport, Venezuela's primary international hub located on the outskirts of Caracas, has sustained serious damage and remains closed.
Emergency Response and International Support
Acting President Delcy Rodríguez declared a state of emergency and appointed a military general to oversee response coordination. Mayor Carmen Meléndez was reported working in the San Bernardino neighbourhood alongside government officials. Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello confirmed on state television that authorities are mobilising all available security and civil assistance resources. US President Donald Trump announced his government is prepared to provide rapid assistance, stating the nation "stands ready, willing and able to help." A tsunami warning initially issued for Venezuela's coast and nearby islands of Aruba and Bonaire was subsequently cancelled.
