Dwayne Johnson Pursues Broadway Debut with The Odd Couple Revival After Kevin Hart Schedule Conflict

Dwayne Johnson has been pursuing a Broadway debut for nearly three years through a planned revival of Neil Simon's The Odd Couple, originally featuring Kevin Hart as his co-star. However, scheduling conflicts have stalled the production, with Hart's commitments extending three to five years into the future. Johnson has indicated he remains committed to the theatrical project, whether with Hart or through an alternative arrangement.

In remarks to People magazine, Johnson disclosed that he, producer Jeffrey Seller, and director Thomas Kail have been collaborating on the initiative. Johnson expressed genuine disappointment about the timing, stating his admiration for Hart's career momentum while acknowledging the reality of his friend's packed schedule. "We should've been great," Johnson said, noting his respect for Hart's professional commitments despite the setback to their collaborative plans.

The Odd Couple, which premiered on Broadway in 1965, centers on mismatched roommates Felix Unger and Oscar Madison. The play subsequently became a 1968 film and an ABC television series that ran for five seasons between 1970 and 1975. Johnson indicated openness to reimagining the project, joking that he might transform it into a musical where he could perform in unconventional vocal registers. Johnson is currently promoting his live-action adaptation of Moana, which he voices in the animated original, while he and Hart are also set to reunite onscreen in Jumanji: Open World, scheduled for release in 2026.

The actor's Broadway aspirations reflect a broader expansion beyond his established career in action films and comedy vehicles. His involvement with director Thomas Kail, who helmed the original production of Hamilton and is directing the Moana live-action adaptation, suggests a serious institutional backing for the theatrical venture.
