Dylan Cease Makes All-Star Game Starting Debut Against Cristopher Sánchez in Philadelphia

Dylan Cease made his first All-Star starting appearance for the Blue Jays in a premier pitching matchup at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. The 2026 All-Star Game featured Cease against National League starter Cristopher Sánchez of the Phillies, both leading contenders for the Cy Young Award.

Elite Starting Pitchers Take the Mound

Cease and Sánchez arrived at the All-Star Game with exceptional credentials. Entering the game, Cease ranked second in the majors in strikeouts with 148 and posted a 2.56 ERA. Sánchez followed closely with 144 strikeouts and a 2.62 ERA. Both pitchers also ranked in the top three in FanGraphs pitching wins above replacement at the time of their selection.

For Sánchez, the starting assignment represented a significant milestone. The Phillies left-hander made his second All-Star appearance after pitching in relief the previous season. "It feels really special and really exciting," Sánchez said during media day, noting the additional significance of pitching before his hometown crowd. "Even more so being here at home."

Historic Moment for Cease

Cease's selection carried particular weight given his career trajectory. The eight-year veteran had previously finished in the top four of Cy Young voting twice—once in 2022 with the White Sox and again in 2024 with the Padres—yet had never received an All-Star starting nod until this season. "It's a massive honor," Cease said. "I'm really excited and I feel very grateful for it."

The starting pitchers shared a historical connection through Roy Halladay, the Hall of Famer who pitched for both franchises. Halladay started the All-Star Game for the Phillies in 2011 and for the Blue Jays in 2009, marking the last instances each team had provided an All-Star Game starter before this matchup.
