EastEnders is bringing back one of the soap's most notorious characters as actress Charlie Brooks reprises her role as Janine Butcher following a four-year absence. Brooks, who first joined the long-running BBC drama in 1999, departed in 2022 after her character faced imprisonment. Janine was convicted of perverting the course of justice and sentenced to five years after framing Linda Carter for a drink-driving incident. Her crimes within the show's narrative include the 2004 murder of her first husband Barry Evans and involvement in the death of her fourth husband Michael Moon in 2013. Following the disappearance of her fifth husband Mick Carter at sea, she was arrested and accepted a plea deal leading to her conviction.

An EastEnders insider confirmed that Brooks will film only a limited number of episodes, though her involvement carries substantial narrative weight.
