The padded leather headrest features flexible side wings and adjustable height settings designed to reduce reliance on personal neck pillows during sleep.

Rollout Timeline and Aircraft Coverage

The U-Dream headrest is already operational on three Emirates Airbus A350 aircraft, with installation continuing across the entire A350 fleet through the end of the year. The airline plans to retrofit most of its Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 fleets starting in 2027. All 270 Boeing 777X aircraft on order will arrive from the manufacturer with the headrest already integrated.

Availability will depend on the specific aircraft assigned to each route, meaning passengers may not encounter the headrest on every Emirates flight initially. The staggered deployment means economy travelers on newer routes may experience the technology sooner than those on established long-haul services.

Design Features and Safety Standards

The headrest incorporates padded leather construction with side wings that fold inward to support the head and neck, allowing passengers to adjust both vertical height and tilt angle based on their sleeping position and physical frame. The design has undergone independent testing and verification against European Union Aviation Safety Agency standards. Cabin crew members have received training to assist passengers in adjusting the device for optimal comfort.

The leather surface has been engineered for easy cleaning and sanitization between flights. According to Emirates President Sir Tim Clark, the innovation fundamentally changes the long-haul economy experience by eliminating the need for passengers to bring their own supportive pillows.

When will the U-Dream headrest be available on all Emirates flights?+
A350 aircraft will have the headrest installed by the end of the year. A380 and Boeing 777 retrofits begin in 2027. All new 777X deliveries will include it from the start. Full fleet coverage will take several years, so availability depends on which aircraft operates your flight.
Do passengers have to use the U-Dream headrest?+
The headrest is an available feature, not mandatory. Passengers can choose to use it or employ their own neck support during sleep. Cabin crew can assist with adjustment if you wish to use it.
How does the headrest accommodate different passenger sizes?+
The headrest offers vertical movement and adjustable tilt functionality, allowing customization based on passenger height and preferred sleeping position. The flexible side wings provide neck support across different body frames.
Has the headrest design been tested for safety?+
Yes, the U-Dream headrest has undergone independent testing and verification against European Union Aviation Safety Agency standards before deployment on Emirates aircraft.
How is the headrest kept clean between flights?+
The leather surface is designed to be wiped down and sanitized after each flight, ensuring hygiene across the multiple passengers who use the same aircraft daily.
