England fielded three debutants against New Zealand as Jamie Smith stepped away for birth of his daughter
The squad changes marked the first time in over two decades that England made five alterations to their home series lineup.

England brought three debutants into the XI for the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval, after wicketkeeper Jamie Smith withdrew to be with his partner following the arrival of his second child. Somerset's James Rew, 22, takes the gloves at number six, alongside batter Jordan Cox and pace bowler Sonny Baker. The changes reflect England's most significant squad restructuring in a home series since 1999.
The Squad Changes
Smith's absence prompted England to make five alterations to the XI that won the opening Test at Lord's by 115 runs. The changes extend beyond Smith's withdrawal: captain Ben Stokes and pace bowler Gus Atkinson became unavailable following a nightclub incident after the first Test, while seamer Ollie Robinson is sidelined with injury. To balance the team composition, England omitted spinner Shoaib Bashir from the lineup.
The inclusion of pace bowlers Jofra Archer and Matthew Fisher, combined with the debuts of Cox and Rew, represents a significant reshaping of England's bowling and middle-order attack. Joe Root has assumed the captaincy on a game-by-game basis in Stokes' absence.
Rew's Path to Debut
Rew, who averages 41.71 across 64 first-class matches for Somerset and has compiled 12 centuries, was named in the original squad for the first Test but did not feature. The 22-year-old spent considerable time on Tuesday practising wicketkeeping at The Oval under the guidance of England fielding coach Sarah Taylor before taking the gloves for the second Test.
The last occasion England fielded three debutants in the same XI was against South Africa at The Oval in 2017. England's five changes to their home series lineup mark the first instance of such extensive alterations since the final Test against New Zealand at the same venue in 1999, more than two decades earlier.
Context of the Squad
Cox has prior experience as a deputy wicketkeeper. He was designated to cover for Smith during the 2024 New Zealand tour when Smith missed matches for the birth of his first child, though a broken thumb sustained in the nets prevented Cox from playing at that time. This second Test represents Cox's Test debut alongside his first opportunity to contribute to England's series efforts.
