ESPN Reports Duke-Michigan Basketball Game Canceled Over Media Rights Complications

Duke and Michigan have called off their scheduled 2026-27 basketball contest after complications with Big Ten television rights made the game logistically unfeasible, according to multiple sports outlets. The Blue Devils will instead face Texas Tech at Madison Square Garden on December 21. The cancellation marks the end of months of negotiation between the two powerhouse programs to find a suitable venue and broadcast arrangement.

Original Plan and Complications

The matchup was initially announced in April as part of Duke's three-game media package with Amazon Prime Video. The teams were set to play at Madison Square Garden before Big Ten media partners raised concerns that Amazon lacked broadcast rights to air the game, citing territorial restrictions. Since New York City falls within the Big Ten's television footprint, the conference's broadcast partners objected to the arrangement, forcing Duke and Michigan to seek an alternative location outside Big Ten territory.

By mid-spring, Duke coach Jon Scheyer and Michigan coach Dusty May explored playing the game at loanDepot Park in Miami, home of the Major League Baseball Marlins. May, who had connections with the Marlins ownership, appeared aligned with the arrangement. However, when May departed Michigan for the Dallas Mavericks in late June, momentum behind the Miami venue dissolved. New Michigan coach Mike Boynton Jr., who took over shortly thereafter, did not finalize the loanDepot Park contract, which remained unsigned by the end of July.

Texas Tech Steps In

Duke moved quickly to secure a replacement opponent. The Blue Devils selected Texas Tech, which defeated Duke in a dramatic 82-81 contest at Madison Square Garden the previous December. Both programs agreed to meet again in the same venue on December 21, with contracts still being finalized. This rematch represents one of the most compelling regular-season matchups Duke has arranged for the upcoming campaign.

Michigan's defensive schedule remains formidable despite the cancellation. The Wolverines, who finished the 2025-26 season with the No. 1 overall strength of schedule, are still set to face UConn, Marquette, Villanova, and participants in the Players Era Festival, which includes Creighton and potential opponents such as Gonzaga, Kansas State, Baylor, or Alabama.

Impact on Boynton's Contract

For Boynton, the scheduling shuffle carries professional weight. His incentive-laden contract requires him to achieve two of four benchmarks to secure a second season at Michigan: winning at least 24 regular-season games, finishing in the Big Ten's top four, capturing the Big Ten Tournament championship, or reaching the NCAA Sweet 16.
