Essex Police Chase Ends with Motorhome Thief Somersaulting from Footbridge

Essex Police released video footage of a stolen motorhome chase that concluded with the driver somersaulting from the vehicle after striking a footbridge railing in Aveley. The suspect, identified as Ricky Halford, 43, of Orpington in Kent, has admitted to theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, failing to provide a specimen, and driving without insurance.

The Pursuit and Crash

Dashcam footage captured the moment officers pursued the stolen motorhome through the streets of Aveley after the driver refused to stop. The vehicle was driven along a pedestrian walkway before becoming wedged between metal railings on a footbridge. Halford then exited the motorhome by somersaulting through a window, landing in the underpass below. Police apprehended him following a brief foot pursuit after he left the vehicle.

Essex Police described the incident as a "dangerous and completely unnecessary pursuit" that endangered other road users and pedestrians. Officers emphasised the recklessness of attempting to navigate a pedestrian walkway in a large vehicle and the risks posed to public safety throughout the chase.

Court Appearance and Sentencing

Halford appeared before magistrates at Southend-on-Sea Magistrates' Court, where he admitted to all five charges. His sentencing has been scheduled for the week beginning 6 July. The release of the dramatic footage by Essex Police serves as a documented record of the incident and the offences committed during the pursuit.
