Europe is preparing for its first total solar eclipse since 1999 on August 12, when the moon will completely block the sun across a narrow path stretching from Greenland through Iceland to northern Spain and the Balearic Islands. Skywatchers across much of Europe, northeastern North America and eastern Canada will observe at least a partial eclipse as the moon appears to take a bite from the solar disk.
Path of Totality and Geographic Coverage
The eclipse will mark a historic moment for mainland Europe. According to physicist Dr María Teresa López Sánchez, this will be the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Spain since 1912—a gap of 114 years. The phenomenon occurs when the moon passes directly between Earth and the sun, briefly transforming day into twilight along the path of totality and revealing the sun's corona, its outer atmospheric layer normally invisible to observers.
Two major reporting expeditions are documenting the event. Space magazine's Daisy Dobrijevic is aboard a vessel exploring Greenland's coast, attempting to witness totality from Scoresby Sund, the world's largest fjord system in the Arctic. Meanwhile, correspondent Anthony Wood is positioned in Valoria la Buena in northern Spain, joining a citizen science initiative called the Distributed Eclipse Broadcast (DEB) project, where the sun will appear low on the western horizon shortly before sunset.
A Rare Convergence of Celestial Events
The timing of this eclipse creates an extraordinary astronomical alignment. Because totality occurs near sunset, observers in Spain will experience what scientists describe as a "double twilight effect"—two sunset-like moments compressed into minutes. That same evening, the Perseids meteor shower will also be visible, creating a rare convergence of celestial phenomena within hours of one another.
Weather remains the primary concern for eclipse chasers worldwide. While clear skies are ideal for viewing, thin cloud cover does not necessarily ruin the experience, as many of the dramatic effects of totality remain visible even under partial cloud obscuration. The tiny Spanish village of Avellanosa de Muñó, located directly in the path of totality, has become an unexpected focal point for observers. The settlement, with almost no residents, restaurants or regular visitors, sits on golden wheat fields with broad western horizons and minimal light pollution—ideal conditions for witnessing the eclipse.
