Ex-UFC Fighter Anthony Smith Arrested on Felony Charges in Nebraska

Ex-UFC light heavyweight contender Anthony Smith has been arrested in Nebraska and charged with three felonies: domestic violence causing serious bodily injury, terroristic threats, and false imprisonment in the first degree. The 38-year-old fighter was booked into Sarpy County Jail Monday evening at 8:44 p.m. and remains in custody. The circumstances surrounding the arrest have not yet been disclosed.

Charges and Potential Penalties

Smith faces serious criminal exposure. The domestic violence charge is classified as a Class 2A felony in Nebraska, carrying a maximum prison sentence of 20 years. The remaining two charges—terroristic threats and false imprisonment in the first degree—are Class 3A felonies, each punishable by up to three years in prison plus 18 months of post-release supervision and fines reaching $10,000. Smith has not yet appeared before a judge, and bond has not been set.

Fighting Career and Recent Activity

Smith competed at the highest levels of mixed martial arts for nearly two decades. He challenged for the UFC light heavyweight title in 2019 against Jon Jones but was defeated in that bid. After losing to Mingyang Zhang by knockout at UFC Kansas City, Smith retired from the promotion in 2024. However, his retirement was short-lived. Earlier this year, he returned to competition at Jorge Masvidal's Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA event, earning a first-round submission victory over Chase Sherman. Smith has also served regularly as an analyst for UFC broadcasts.
