Extreme Heat Forces Rail Suspensions Across England as Track Buckles Under Pressure
Weather tomorrow brings continued extreme temperatures forcing major rail suspensions across England.

Major train services across England face significant disruptions as extreme heat causes rail infrastructure to buckle and fail. A red heat health alert has been extended through Friday across the southwest and central regions, with temperatures in the West climbing to the mid-30s and atmospheric conditions making conditions feel closer to 40 degrees Celsius.

Rail Network Collapse Under Heat Stress
West Midlands Railway suspended services between Coventry and Leamington Spa after a rail buckled in Leamington. The disruption, expected to extend through Friday, affects multiple operators including Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, and West Midlands Railway routes spanning London, Stourbridge, Birmingham, Stratford-upon-Avon, and Banbury. Services on the Cross City Line between Lichfield and Bromsgrove, the Rugeley Trent Valley line, and the Camp Hill and Snow Hill lines are all operating under reduced timetables.
Network Rail and rail operators explained that extreme heat causes two distinct infrastructure failures. Rails expand and buckle in high temperatures, forcing trains to operate at reduced speeds. Additionally, overhead power lines sag in the heat, requiring slower train speeds to prevent damage. Denise Wetton, Network Rail's Central route director, advised passengers to allow extra time for journeys, carry water for hydration, and prepare for busier services if travel is essential.
School Closures and Health Concerns Multiply
Hundreds of schools across the southwest region remained closed due to unsafe working conditions. Steve Chalke, founder of Oasis Academy which operates ten schools in the Bristol area, stated that even air-conditioned facilities had to shut because teachers could not work when their own children's schools were closed. Claire Savory, CEO of The GLA Trust running eleven primary schools in Gloucestershire, described the situation as "unprecedented times," with each school conducting risk assessments to determine closure decisions.
Health authorities issued guidance on managing extreme heat impacts. The UK Health Security Agency extended the red alert from Thursday evening through Friday evening. Mental health services warned that certain medical conditions and medications impair the body's ability to manage heat effectively, urging people to maintain contact with family and friends while monitoring their wellbeing.
Ticket Flexibility and Travel Restrictions
Rail operators implemented temporary ticket policies to accommodate widespread disruptions. Passengers holding tickets for Wednesday or Thursday travel can use them on any day through the following Tuesday or receive full refunds at their purchase point. West Midlands Railway and Great Western Railway cancelled the majority of remaining services, with Great Western specifically cancelling most Wednesday services between Bristol Temple Meads and London Paddington along with numerous local routes.
