Fernando Mendoza and Family Donate Half Million Dollars to Fund MS Research at University of Miami

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Fernando Mendoza and his family presented a $500,000 gift to the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine to support multiple sclerosis research. The contribution, made in partnership with the National MS Society, honors Mendoza's mother, Elsa, who lives with MS. When combined with the family's earlier grassroots fundraising totaling over $414,000, the Mendoza family's cumulative pledge to MS research now exceeds $940,000.

Research Advancement and Impact

The donation will establish a first-of-its-kind MS stem cell transplantation trial launching in the fall at the University of Miami's MS Center of Excellence, one of the nation's leading institutions for multiple sclerosis research. The initiative represents a significant step toward translating laboratory discoveries into accessible, affordable treatments for the approximately one million Americans living with MS.

Dr. Bruce Bebo, Chief Research and Medical Affairs Officer at the National MS Society, characterized the gift as instrumental in moving scientific advancement forward. The organization has marked 80 years of funding research that has resulted in every FDA-approved MS therapy currently available. The Mendoza family's contribution aligns with the National MS Society's Fund Answers campaign, which highlights research breakthroughs enabled by major donors.

Mendoza's Personal Motivation

During the presentation event, Mendoza spoke emotionally about his mother's resilience. "Today isn't about football. It's about my mom," he stated, his voice wavering as he addressed the gathering. He referenced his Heisman Trophy acceptance speech, in which he credited his mother for demonstrating authentic strength. "When I accepted the Heisman Trophy, I said she showed me what real toughness looks like. I might have been talking about football, but I was really talking about life."
