Former Scottish National Party Chief Peter Murrell Sentenced to Over Five Years for Embezzling Party Funds
Scottish Sun reports former SNP chief Peter Murrell sentenced to over five years for embezzling £400,000 from the party.

Peter Murrell, former chief executive of the Scottish National Party, has been sentenced to more than five years imprisonment for embezzling over £400,000 in party funds accumulated during his 12-year tenure. The High Court in Edinburgh heard that Murrell used stolen money to purchase luxury items including a motorhome valued at £124,550, with authorities now freezing more than £600,000 of his personal assets pending a proceeds of crime hearing scheduled for mid-September.

The Charges and Sentencing
Murrell's conviction concluded Operation Branchform, a criminal investigation into financial mismanagement within the SNP during his leadership. The court determined that he systematically embezzled party funds, converting them into personal purchases and lifestyle upgrades. The sentencing represents a significant moment for Scottish politics, marking the downfall of a figure who wielded considerable influence over the party's operations for more than a decade.
Beyond the prison sentence, Murrell faces severe financial consequences. The courts have already frozen approximately £600,000 in assets, including two private pension funds and his half-share of the family home he occupied with former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. The judge retains broad authority to issue a confiscation order that would transfer seized funds to the state, reflecting the multi-million pound cost to taxpayers of the investigation. Alternatively, Lord Young may issue a compensation order returning embezzled money directly to the SNP.
The Luxury Purchases Under Investigation
Police forensic evidence revealed the extent of Murrell's illicit acquisitions. The most prominent purchase was the Niessmann and Bischoff motorhome, a luxury touring vehicle that cost £124,550. The vehicle was delivered to an industrial estate and subsequently driven to his mother's residence in Dunfermline, where it remained until police seized it on 5 April 2023. The motorhome sat partially hidden in the driveway, positioned between the house and the adjacent property, with windows and a garden gate creating a semi-obscured parking arrangement.
Inside the motorhome, police discovered an array of kitchen equipment and toiletries purchased with stolen funds. Inventory items included Le Creuset cookware, Joseph Joseph utensils, an Alessi teapot priced at £220, and various Molton Brown luxury toiletries. Photographs taken by Crown forensic officers documented these goods in detail, including the reflection of detectives in forensic suits visible within the mirrored teapot as they catalogued the contents. Sturgeon later told the BBC she had no conscious memory of seeing the motorhome, stating it remained hidden from view due to its positioning alongside the house.
Financial Reckoning Ahead
When Murrell emerges from prison in coming years, his financial position will be substantially diminished. Whatever combination of confiscation and compensation orders the court implements, he stands to lose most or all of his accumulated wealth. The SNP, under the leadership of First Minister John Swinney, has requested that compensation orders direct recovered funds back to the party to offset the damage caused by Murrell's misconduct.
