Greg James Takes Time Away from Radio 1 After Loss of Beloved Dog Barney

BBC Radio 1 breakfast host Greg James has announced the death of his chocolate Labrador Barney, taking time away from his presenting duties following the loss. James shared the news on Instagram, stating that Barney was put to sleep peacefully at his home in the garden, and that he and his wife, author Bella Mackie, are requesting privacy during their grief.

James adopted Barney from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in 2019 alongside Mackie. The dog had become well-known among Radio 1 listeners, as James frequently referenced him during broadcasts and shared updates and videos on social media. A recurring segment on the show called "Barney, Are You There?!" became familiar to regular listeners. James described his pet as "an unbelievably daft farty brilliant dog" and said he had cherished sharing Barney's personality with his audience.

In his social media message, James expressed his emotional state candidly, stating he was "completely floored" by the loss and "can't stop crying." He explicitly requested that listeners refrain from direct messages or mentions of Barney for the time being, emphasizing that both he and Mackie needed space to process their grief. Fellow Radio 1 presenter Charlie Hedges stepped in to cover the breakfast show on Tuesday morning, offering supportive remarks on air and encouraging listeners to send positive thoughts to James.

Barney had received ongoing veterinary care over the years, including multiple visits to Professor Noel Fitzpatrick, the veterinarian featured in the television series The Supervet, to address arthritic joint issues. Earlier this year, James undertook a 1,000-kilometre tandem cycling challenge across England, Wales, and Scotland to raise funds for Comic Relief. Among the motivational videos he received during that endeavor was footage of Barney barking frantically at foxes in their garden.
