Gugu Mbatha-Raw Stars in Sky's Supernatural Thriller Possession, Blending Colonial History with Mystery
Gugu Mbatha-Raw stars as Claudia, an ambitious lawyer drawn into a supernatural case involving a disputed plantation inheritance in Jamaica.

Sky has unveiled Possession, a five-part supernatural thriller starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Claudia, a mixed-race lawyer from Bristol who becomes entangled in a mysterious inheritance dispute tied to a Jamaican plantation with a brutal past. The series, created by writer Karla Crome and directed by Jamaican filmmaker Storm Saulter, interweaves contemporary legal drama with supernatural elements and historical reckoning. The cast includes Jonny Lee Miller as Oliver Connaught and Sheldon Shepherd as Cudjoe East, with the narrative spanning between England and Jamaica.
Plot and Central Conflict
Claudia, ambitious yet disconnected from her Caribbean heritage following her Jamaican mother's death shortly after her birth, accepts a case that will fundamentally alter her life. Her law firm tasks her with challenging an inheritance claim: Cudjoe East, a local Jamaican man, has mysteriously inherited the sprawling Hope Hill estate from Oliver Connaught, a wealthy white aristocrat descended from slave owners. When Claudia travels to Jamaica to confront Cudjoe and demand he renounce the property, she discovers the disputed land is the very location that has haunted her nightmares.
As Claudia and Oliver investigate deeper, they uncover a disturbing connection between Hope Hill's plantation past and injustices still shaping the present. Cudjoe claims to be a 300-year-old formerly enslaved eyewitness to slavery's brutality, now asserting his right to the estate as reparations. Supernatural forces emerge as central to the mystery, blurring boundaries between reality and the occult.
Production and Creative Vision
Director Storm Saulter, himself Jamaican, has stated that the project represents years of professional development toward creating work that does not relegate history to background detail. The production was filmed on location in Jamaica, where sets were meticulously constructed to recreate 18th-century plantation environments. Saulter has described the series as television designed to haunt audiences long after credits roll, combining entertainment with profound thematic weight.
The supporting cast includes Bel Powley, Sean Gilder, Richard Dillane, and Jack Bandeira. The series is produced by Snowed-In in association with Sky Studios, with executive producers including both Mbatha-Raw and Miller alongside showrunner Karla Crome and director Saulter. The project was developed from an original story by Jefferson Bannis.
