The 44 Game features the top 44 performers selected from the main invitational event held at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex in Vero Beach, Florida. Athletes compete over a weekend that includes training, competition, and instruction led by respected baseball figures including Ken Griffey Jr., Ken Griffey Sr., Marvin Freeman, Jemile Weeks, and Lou Collier.
According to Athletics scout Rich Sparks, the evaluation process extends beyond traditional athletic metrics. Scouts systematically assess five core tools: running speed, throwing strength, hitting ability, power potential, and defensive capability. However, Sparks emphasized that character assessment—referred to as "makeup"—holds equal or greater importance than physical tools when identifying prospects with long-term potential.

Sparks noted that baseball inherently involves consistent failure, making a prospect's reaction to poor performance a critical indicator of future success. He described signing players who struggled significantly in front of scouts—even recording zero hits in seventeen attempts—based solely on their demeanor and response to adversity during those difficult moments.
The Hank Aaron Invitational, named for the Braves legend's retired number 44, has operated since 2015 under various names before receiving its current designation in 2019. The invitational provides pathways for diverse young athletes to compete at professional standards and gain exposure to college and Major League scouts.
