A Jackie Robinson rookie card with an on-card autograph has reached nearly $1 million in an ongoing Fanatics Collect auction, establishing a record for signed examples of the historic 1948 Leaf card. The discovery came when a family member inherited the card and brought it to a local card shop, where staff recognized its extraordinary rarity. According to PSA's population report, only five authenticated signed copies of the 1948 Leaf Jackie Robinson rookie exist in existence.

Authentication and Card Details

The card underwent professional grading through PSA, which assessed it with a card grade of 1 and an exceptional PSA/DNA autograph grade of 8. Fanatics Collect covered the substantial cost of submission—PSA's grading fees begin around $10,000 for cards valued above $250,000. Robinson's signature appears in blue ink along the left side of the card without obscuring his face, presented in large, legible strokes that match the autograph quality standards of previously record-holding signed Robinson cards.

The autograph grade of 8 places this card alongside the previously most expensive signed vintage baseball card ever sold. However, this newly discovered 1948 Leaf example displays superior overall condition compared to the other four authenticated signed copies in existence, contributing significantly to its valuation trajectory during the active auction period.

Why Signed Robinson Cards Are Exceptionally Rare

The scarcity of Jackie Robinson autographed cards stems from two historical factors. Robinson passed away at age 53 in 1972, limiting the window for collecting his signatures. Additionally, during Robinson's playing career, obtaining autographs on baseball cards was considered taboo among collectors, who widely believed that writing on cards diminished their value. This prevailing philosophy prevented fans from seeking Robinson's signatures, explaining the remarkably low population counts of authentic on-card autographs from the vintage era.

The previous record for an expensive Jackie Robinson card was held by a 1952 Topps #312 graded PSA 9, which sold for $960,000 in 2021. While 11 examples of that 1952 card exist in PSA 9 condition, the 1948 Leaf represents Robinson's true rookie card—considered more iconic and historically significant within the collecting community despite receiving a lower individual card grade.
