Homeless Man Sentenced to Indefinite Hospital Order After Killing Pensioner in Walworth Market Attack

A 67-year-old homeless man has been sentenced to indefinite hospital detention under mental health legislation after fatally stabbing a pensioner and injuring two others during a random knife attack at an East London market on Remembrance Sunday nearly two years ago. The defendant, who has schizoaffective disorder and had stopped taking prescribed medication, was sentenced at the Old Bailey after admitting manslaughter by diminished responsibility.

The Attack
Musse Ali entered a shop at East Street market in Walworth, south London, on 10 November 2024, and stole a kitchen knife measuring between 20 and 25 centimetres. After being pushed out of the shop by the proprietor, Ali launched a series of unprovoked assaults on three people in rapid succession.
His first victim, Ho Man Yau, was struck multiple times as Ali "ran at him" with the blade. A witness described Ali's appearance as "crazy" with "wide and scary" eyes. Following this initial attack, Ali wounded Baheru Nadew Bartura, who sustained a deep penetrative wound to the chest requiring extensive medical treatment, and fatally stabbed Hilkiah McLeggan, a 77-year-old grandfather, who died at the scene from a stab wound to the back. Ali subsequently attempted to attack other members of the public before being disarmed.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
Judge Nigel Lickley KC acknowledged that Ali's mental illness was the "main driver in his horrific offending that day" and accepted expert evidence that his violent behaviour directly resulted from being "very unwell at the time." The judge described Ali as a "dangerous" individual, noting that "a life was lost and many lives changed as a consequence" of the attack, which caused "serious alarm and distress" to the community.
Ali was sentenced to a hospital order under Section 37 of the Mental Health Act with a restriction order under Section 41, meaning he will remain in hospital indefinitely and can only be released if deemed safe by mental health professionals and the courts. Hilkiah McLeggan was remembered by family and friends as "a warm, kind, and generous man who would do anything for his friends and family."
