India Rests Key Players for Third ODI Against Afghanistan After Securing Series Victory
India's assistant coach confirms rotation strategy for AFG vs IND third ODI in Chennai with KL Rahul remaining in middle order.

India will deploy a rotated squad for the third ODI against Afghanistan in Chennai on Saturday, with assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate confirming that KL Rahul will continue batting in the middle order while Yashasvi Jaiswal partners opening batter Shubman Gill. Fast bowler Arshdeep Singh is expected to be rested after a strong performance in the series-clinching matches.
Batting Lineup Strategy
Ten Doeschate addressed the composition of India's batting unit at the pre-match press conference, stating that Jaiswal will retain his opening role despite failing to register a significant score in the previous encounter. The extended net session work by Jaiswal and Gill at Chepauk on Friday underscored the coaching staff's commitment to providing the young batter with additional opportunities to prove himself at the top of the order.
The middle order will feature the customary arrangement with five established batsmen, supplemented by Nitish Reddy and Washington Sundar, both capable of contributing with the bat. The decision to keep Rahul in his designated middle-order position reflects India's preference for maintaining continuity rather than experimenting with positional adjustments at this juncture of the series.
Rotation and Rest Management
With India having secured an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, the coaching staff signaled intentions to manage workload and evaluate different player combinations. "We will be making a few changes from the first two games. Part of the brief coming into the series was we wanted to try a few different combinations and give everyone a fair share of games," ten Doeschate explained.
Arshdeep's likely replacement is Nitish Reddy, who was rested during the second match at Lucknow. Harshit Rana, recently added to the squad following recovery from knee surgery, may not feature immediately. The coaching staff also confirmed that skipper Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan have recovered from minor physical concerns—calf cramps and a shoulder issue respectively—sustained during the heat of the Lucknow encounter.
Player Development Focus
Ten Doeschate highlighted the transformation of wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan, noting his evolution from a T20-focused batter to someone capable of pacing ODI innings with maturity. The versatility of India's batting lineup, according to the assistant coach, provides flexibility for tactical adjustments across formats while maintaining competitive balance in series-deciding matches.
