Ismail Elfath Becomes Lead Referee for Netherlands-Japan Match at 2026 World Cup in Dallas
The match will be held at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, positioning Elfath among several Texas-connected referees selected for the tournament.

Ismail Elfath, a Moroccan-born American referee based in Austin, has been appointed to lead the Netherlands-Japan match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The fixture will take place at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, marking a significant assignment for the two-time MLS Referee of the Year. Elfath's selection reflects Texas's emergence as a pipeline for top-tier international soccer officials.
Elfath's Path to the World Cup
Elfath's journey to international officiating began unconventionally. After immigrating to the United States as a teenager, he completed his studies at the University of Texas. According to an interview he gave to the Pflugerville Football Club, Elfath entered refereeing when a complaint he filed about a match official transformed into an invitation to try the role himself. He joined Major League Soccer's officiating roster in 2012 and earned his FIFA international license in 2016.
His résumé now includes significant World Cup experience. At the 2022 tournament in Qatar, Elfath refereed two group-stage matches and one Round of 16 encounter involving Japan against Croatia. He also served as fourth official for the final between Argentina and France. In MLS, he has received Referee of the Year honours twice over the past six years, establishing himself among the league's most respected officials.
Dallas Emerges as a Refereeing Hub
Elfath is part of a larger trend reshaping soccer officiating in the United States. Texas has quietly developed into a talent pipeline for FIFA-listed referees. Fellow Texan Armando Villarreal, who began his career officiating youth matches in Brownsville at age 18, made his MLS debut in 2012 and earned his FIFA ranking in 2015. Villarreal has since worked MLS Cup finals, CONCACAF Gold Cup tournaments, and was selected as video assistant referee for the 2022 World Cup. For the Netherlands-Japan fixture, Villarreal will manage the VAR operations, continuing his World Cup involvement.
The Netherlands-Japan match will feature an international officiating team. Corey Parker and Kyle Atkins will serve as assistant referees, while Mexican official Katia Itzel Garcia manages the technical area. Garcia brings experience from the 2024 Summer Olympics, the 2023 Women's World Cup, and the 2024 CONCACAF W Gold Cup. Additional support comes from Mexican reserve assistant Sandra Ramirez and Brazilian VAR assistant Rodolpho Toski, with Polish official Tomasz Kwiatkowski completing the screen-based referee crew.
