The 23-year-old Nice player was arrested in late May on suspicion of deliberately earning a yellow card during a domestic league fixture, sparking unprecedented scrutiny on the competition just days before it began.

The Entry Denial and Resolution

Canadian immigration officials delayed authorization of Wahi's visa while requesting additional information about his legal status, according to statements from the Ivory Coast Football Federation (FIF). The federation initially confirmed the player had been unable to obtain permission to enter Canadian territory. However, on Thursday, immigration authorities approved his entry, and the FIF announced that the necessary authorizations for Wahi to join the team delegation had been obtained.

A spokesperson for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada emphasized that the country applies standard immigration procedures consistently, noting that hosting major sporting events does not alter entry requirements. Officials indicated that in exceptional cases, temporary resident permits may be granted to individuals who otherwise would be inadmissible.

The Match-Fixing Allegations

Wahi's legal complications stem from an investigation launched by the Marseille public prosecutor's office into allegations of organized fraud and sports corruption. French authorities arrested him on May 29 following his involvement in a May 17 fixture between Nice and Metz, where investigators allege he deliberately received a yellow card to benefit illegal betting schemes. The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), France's domestic football governing body, confirmed detecting an unusually high volume of bets placed specifically on Wahi receiving a booking during the match in question.

Spot-fixing—the deliberate manipulation of isolated match incidents to facilitate betting profits—represents a serious breach of sporting integrity. Wahi was released following police questioning, and investigations remain active. The Ivory Coast federation stated it had not been informed of any judicial or administrative proceedings against the player before his travel complications arose.

World Cup Participation Continues

Despite the controversy, Wahi began the tournament actively, starting in Ivory Coast's opening Group E victory over Ecuador, where he struck the crossbar during the second half. The team's next fixture takes place against Germany in Toronto on Saturday, with Wahi now cleared to feature.
