Jacob deGrom Declines Trade to Atlanta Braves, Commits to Texas Rangers

Jacob deGrom refused to waive his no-trade clause when the Atlanta Braves pursued him ahead of the trade deadline, choosing to remain with the Texas Rangers. The two-time Cy Young Award winner, who is 38 years old, cited his belief in the Rangers organization and his desire to help the team win a World Series as reasons for declining the move. DeGrom has full no-trade protection on his contract and possessed complete authority over any potential trade.

The Braves' Pursuit

Atlanta's front office contacted Texas to express interest in acquiring deGrom, according to sources familiar with the discussions. The Rangers indicated they would facilitate a deal if the pitcher agreed to waive his no-trade protection. Multiple teams beyond the Braves made inquiries about the veteran right-hander, but deGrom made his intentions clear through his decision.

The Braves entered the trade deadline in a strong position, leading the National League East by eight games with a 67-45 record. They have battled through significant injuries to their starting rotation and sought to bolster their postseason rotation, which already included fellow Cy Young winner Chris Sale. DeGrom's 3.96 earned run average this season would have represented a career worst, but the team viewed him as a potential complement to their ace.

DeGrom's Commitment to Texas

In a statement to reporters, deGrom expressed his loyalty to the organization. "I want to be here," he said. "I believe in this group. I signed here to help this team win a World Series. In 2023, the team was able to do that. I want to be a part of that in the future." DeGrom signed a five-year, $185 million free-agent contract with the Rangers heading into the 2023 season and has one year remaining on the deal.

The Rangers' recent performance added context to the trade discussions. After leading the American League West by two games as recently as the Tuesday before the deadline, Texas lost five consecutive games and fell 2.5 games behind the Houston Astros following a sweep by their division rivals. The team's playoff odds dropped to 36.7 percent, positioning them as potential sellers. However, their inability to move several key players due to varying degrees of no-trade protection limited their options. The Rangers completed only a minor deal, trading utility player Josh Smith to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Other Rangers stars also possess no-trade provisions. Shortstop Corey Seager can block trades to eight teams and will receive full 10-and-5 rights at the end of the season. Right-hander Nathan Eovaldi was also approached about waiving his protection, along with left-handers MacKenzie Gore and Jacob Latz being discussed as potential trade candidates.
